1864 George B. McClellan Presidential Campaign Poster
Here is a rare Presidential campaign poster for the Democratic Party candidate, Major General George B. McClellan, who was trying to deny President Abraham Lincoln reelection. This lithograph is by Lewis & Goodwin of Albany, New York. The framed poster trumpets McClellan as "THE NATION"S HOPE!" and his platform as "Liberty! Union!! and the Constitution!!!" Wikipedia has a biography of McClellan which explains his relationship with Abraham Lincoln and his motives in trying to replace Lincoln after Lincoln replaced him as the general in charge of Union forces in the Civil War. The poster is very attractively framed. The poster has some water stains and smudging, some of the edges have paper loss and the logo in white, "THE NATION"S HOPE!" is faded. About what you would expect from an 1864 campaign poster that has not been in the drawers of the Smithsonian Institution for 140 years. The poster itself measures 16 x 20 inches and the frame is 20 1/2 x 25 inches. A notable Americana dealer, Rex Stark, offered an unframed copy with a water stain in 2007 for $2,750. Price: SOLD
