William Howard Taft and James Schoolcraft Sherman 1908 Campaign Tin Plate Shows All Republican Presidential Nominees from 1856 through 1908
Offered here is a classic political tin plate issued for the 1908 Presidential election or 1909 inauguration of Republican nominees William Howard Taft for President and James Schoolcraft Sherman for Vice President. At the bottom of the plate is is labeled "Grand Old Party 1856-1908 Standard Bearers" and the around the edges are pictures of all the Republican nominees for President. Generally those nominees who were successful have the dates of their Presidency inside their portrait circle and those who lost (only John Fremont and James Blaine) have the year than ran for President, but there is some inconsistency in that James Garfield, Chester Arthur and Rutherford Hayes served as President but only have one year listed and Theodore Roosevelt only has 1901 though 1904 listed but served until 1909. Below are close-ups of the pictures of Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.
The pictures above give a good representation of the condition of the plate. The plate is 9 1/2 inches and there is some soiling, fading of text under the Taft and Sherman portraits and minor chipping of paint but it makes a very good impression for display and all the portraits are very clear. The 2004 price guide update to Hake's political items for 1789 -1916 lists this item at $350 and one recently sold on eBay for over $400. Price: $275
