This is an original 1872 Vanity Fair print of the United States Senator from Massachusetts, Charles Sumner, the leading Abolitionist in Congress, who was beaten severely by a Southern while he was in his Senate seat in 1856 and returned four years later to be a major supporter and antagonist to Abraham Lincoln. The print is titled "STATESMEN, No. 113" and under that "The Massive Grievance" which refers to the dispute with England over reparations for the English allowing the Southern warship Alabama to be built on their shores. Included with the print is the description of Sumner by Jehu Junior for Vanity Fair, and an unusually complimentary one it is. Below is a close-up of the Sumner print and an excerpt from the Vanity Fair biography of Sumner.
