Prints From "The Indian Tribes of North America" by Thomas McKenney and James Hall

These prints came from "The Indian Tribes of North America" by Thomas McKenney and James Hall, which was originally published starting in 1836. The portraits in the book were taken from paintings collected for the Indian Gallery of The former War Department. McKenney was the first Superintendent of Indian Trade in 1816 and in 1824 the first  head of the Bureau of Indians affairs which was then part of the War Department. He was an admirer of Native Americans and their strong advocate at a time when Indian tribes were treated as sovereign nations.

The portraits offered here are photogravure prints from the 1933-34 Edinburgh, Scotland, edition of the famous McKenney & Hall set of books. Each of the prints is matted to a standard 9 x 12 inch frame size and some of them have already been framed as shown below. Each of the prints include the name and tribe of the Indian shown in a mat cutout below the portrait and many include the complete biography included in the book, "The Indian Tribes of North America."

Shipping of the framed prints is $15 and for the matted prints it is $7. Click on the pictures or titles below for more information and prices.
